Republican to Retire from Competitive House Seat in New York
GOP Rep. Chris Gibson of New York is set to announce his retirement on Tuesday, according to two Republican sources.
Gibson won re-election in November in convincing fashion with a 65 percent to 35 percent victory over self-funding Democrat Sean Eldridge. But the open seat should be extremely competitive as well as expensive because of its overlap with the New York City media market.
On the eve of the 114th Congress, Republicans already have two very competitive open seats to defend: New York's 19th District left by Murphy and Pennsylvania’s 8th District, because of Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick’s retirement.
According to the GOP sources, Gibson is not resigning and will serve out his term.
